As you leave the lobby-lounge, you are once again greeted by the vertical wall panels. These custom-made panels not only act as a partition, but they also represent the strength and unity of the Chinese people. As you pass through these “gates,” you feel the promise of China’s past and future.

You enter the five-story atrium and realize the sliver of floating crystal is actually a 3,000 kg crystal installation. It hangs in the void, suspended from the metal sky roof by a series of wires. It’s entrancing. It’s strong, delicate and transformative, the way it picks up the colors of the sunrise and sunset. It lures your gaze upward, allowing you to survey the depth, layers and levels of the atrium.

While looking upward, you notice a series of small glass-enclosed lounges jutting out from each floor. These “conversation nooks” contain a sofa and a couple chairs and help temper the atrium void, making it less overpowering and more residential. You also notice a tarnished bronze wall covering that lines each level of the atrium. Again, alluding to Changsha’s bronze heritage, this hand-painted custom finish adds one more layer of culture to the space, and the brownish-green discoloration is an unexpected pop of color.

As your gaze returns to the ground level, you see more red vertical panels. These panels are staggered throughout the atrium, hosting rock and water features. Together, they form a modern Zen garden that reiterates the sense of place.
